Can I Move My Hot Tub?

How to move my hot tub.

The weather outside is frightful. But your hot tub is cozy, bubbling, and running like a champ. It’s perfect… or at least it would be if it were in a different spot. So, if you’re asking yourself, “Can I move my hot tub?” Goodall Pools & Spas recommends a slight revision to that question. Instead, ask, “Can my hot tub be moved?” The answer is yes, as long as you make the appropriate preparations.

“Can I Move My Hot Tub?”: The Wisest Approach

Moving a hot tub is no easy task. Can it be a DIY task? Yes, but it’s highly recommended that you contact professionals to do the job correctly and safely.

No matter what, it’s important to make sure that moving your hot tub won’t void any warranties or guarantees. Most hot tub manufacturers will require professional movers for warranty coverage, so be sure to consult your owner’s manual and warranty paperwork before attempting to move your hot tub.

Know the Hot Tub. Know the Rules.

Hot tub owners and anyone enlisted to move a hot tub have some homework to do before attempting to move it. Specifically, movers need to be aware of the hot tub’s weight capacity and any local regulations regarding hot tub installation. Local authorities may have certain requirements for hot tubs that are being moved or installed, and it’s important to ensure all applicable laws are followed.

Safety is Always First

Safety is of utmost importance when moving a hot tub. Before beginning the move, turn off the power and disconnect all electrical wiring from the hot tub and any pumps or other components. At Goodall Pools, we can recommend a licensed electrician to help our customers with this step, if necessary.

Anyone involved in physically moving the tub should guard themselves by wearing protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and steel-toed boots. If the hot tub is being moved in cold or snowy weather, be sure that all pathways are thoroughly cleared and salted.

What It Takes to Move a Hot Tub

First, you’ll need to drain the hot tub according to its instructions. Then, remove any remaining water with a shop vac and wipe down the surface until dry. Finally, double-check that all the spa components are still secured to the structure.

Whether you’re moving your hot tub to a new address or just a smidgen to the left, there are certain items used during the procedure. These items include:

  • Dollies and straps (or slings) for lifting and moving the hot tub
  • Tarps to protect the hot tub from scratches during transport
  • Moving blankets
  • Packing materials such as foam pipe insulation, bubble wrap, etc., for wrapping the hot tub if needed.

Moving a Hot Tub in Winter

When moving a hot tub outdoors in cold weather, make sure to cover it with a tarp and/or plastic wrap before transporting it outside. This will help prevent water droplets from freezing inside the hot tub and causing damage. If you move the hot tub outdoors, remember to keep an eye on the temperature gauge throughout the winter months. This will help prevent issues related to extreme temperatures.
