How a Hot Tub Helps the Common Cold

If you’re looking for natural ways to manage the discomfort of a cold, your hot tub may be an excellent tool for your recovery. The warmth of the water and steam can help reduce inflammation, improve breathing, and ease muscle and joint pain. In addition to these physical benefits, a hot tub can also help you relax stress and anxiety away. And who doesn’t want to relieve the stress of feeling sick?

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we want you to experience all the health benefits hot tubs offer. That’s why you should always consult your healthcare provider before starting any spa regimen. It’s important to note that a hot tub should not be used to replace traditional medical treatment. Rather, it should be used to supplement your recovery.

What is the common cold?

The common cold is a viral infection that affects the upper respiratory system, causing symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, and sore throat. While it’s not usually a serious illness, it can be annoying and disruptive to daily life. While there is no cure for the common cold, there are ways to manage the symptoms and reduce the severity of the illness. If you have access to a hot tub, you have an effective remedy awaiting you!

How should I use my hot tub when I have a cold?

No matter your physical state, it’s important to stay hydrated when using any type of spa. The heat of the water may cause you to sweat and lose fluids. Therefore, it’s recommended to drink plenty of water before and after using a hot tub. This is especially important if you’re already experiencing dehydration due to a cold or flu.

The water should be warm, but not too hot. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a maximum temperature of around 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important to be mindful of your body’s response to the heat. Take breaks if you start to feel overheated or uncomfortable.

How does hot tubbing help you fight a cold?

One of the ways a hot tub can help you fight a cold is by inducing a false fever. The heated water helps elevate your body’s core temperature, simulating the effects of a fever. This, in turn, helps your immune system fight the cold.

When you have a cold, your immune system is working hard to eradicate the infection. This can cause inflammation in your respiratory system, leading to discomfort and pain. A hot tub can help to reduce this inflammation and provide relief to your body. The warmth of the water and the steam generated can help open your airways. This makes it easier to breathe and reduces congestion.

In addition to relieving congestion and improving breathing, a hot tub can also help reduce muscle aches and pains. The buoyancy of the water reduces the pressure on your muscles and joints. This can be especially beneficial if you are experiencing body aches and pains as a result of your cold.

When is a good time to use my hot tub for cold relief?

One of the most effective ways to use a hot tub for cold relief is to take a soak before bed. The warm water can help relax your body and cue it for a good night’s sleep. When you sleep, your body is able to focus on healing itself, which can help speed up your recovery.
