Should I modernize my swimming pool with something trendy or classic?

August 15, 2022 By Lindsay Surmacz

A curvy inground pool with light blue liner sits in the Pennsylvania daylight. Shape and color are two of the design factors to consider when asking "Should I modernize my swimming pool with something trendy or classic?"

You’re ready to modernize your swimming pool. Hooray! What aesthetic are you going for with your pool renovation: trendy or classic? This is a tricky question that has resulted in many spats between pool moms and dads across the decades. Some insist on keeping up with the times. Others prefer to stick with the tried and true.

The truth is that we at Goodall Pools and Spas can give you a beautiful pool with either approach. The trick is to adopt a mindset that asks, “What is best for the home?” Don’t get stuck thinking of your pool like a pair of shoulder pads. “Is it classic? Trendy? Or both? Oh well. Let’s just spend the money and be done with it.”

How do I modernize my swimming pool?

When it comes to modernizing your pool, give some thought to the following 4 design factors:

  1. Budget
  2. Shape
  3. Color
  4. Water Features

In each of these categories, there are a variety of both classic and trendy style choices available to you depending on your situation.

1. Budget

First and foremost, your budget dictates the scope of your renovation. If you prefer to spend less, you may opt for something simpler like a liner replacement. Or perhaps you’ve been saving for this project over several years and want a complete overhaul. Great! The specialists in the Goodall Design Center will help you establish what features and styles best suit your update.

The important thing to remember is that the job doesn’t have to be big. A new vinyl liner, for instance, is an economical way to revamp your pool with either a classic or trendy pattern. Visit our blog, How Much Does a Pool Liner Replacement Cost in 2022? for a more detailed explanation of liner replacement costs.

2. Shape

Nowadays, the possibilities are endless when it comes to pool shapes. In the classic column, you see mainly rectangular, round, and kidney-shaped pools. A more contemporary shape tends to be more free form.

The size and topography of your yard influence your pool shape the most. However, there’s always room for creativity. A good starting strategy is to look at your current pool’s footprint and imagine where you can riff on the geometry a little bit. If, for instance, you have a rectangular pool, you may add something as simple as a semicircular stair entry to the shallow end.

3. Color

Blue. That’s what we think of when we picture classic swimming pools. And why not? It’s the perfect compliment to the clear, sunny sky on your best swim days. But remember, it’s 2022. And not all pools have to be the same color as Elvis’s eyes to inspire awe.

Let the color and lighting of your backyard guide you. If your yard gets a lot of sunlight, then a lighter blue or teal may work well because of how they enhance the shimmer and sparkle of the water. If you live in a more shaded area, a darker color like jade may look fitting amongst the vegetation.

Pro Tip: If energy efficiency ranks higher on your priority list than appearances, go with a darker liner. They absorb more sunlight and, therefore, help warm your pool without relying so much on the pool heater.

4. Water Features

A well-maintained pool, regardless of size, shape, or color, is and always will be a beautiful thing. If, however, you want to give it a distinctively modern twist, a well-positioned water feature or two will do the trick.

Water features include fountains, deck jets, scuppers, and spillways, just to name a few. These enhance both the sight and sound of water entering your pool.

Think beyond the pool.

Pool renovations aren’t just about pools. They’re about the pool environment. That includes the pool deck and the surrounding yard. So whatever you envision for your modernized pool, contact us at Goodall Pools and Spas. We’ll help you brainstorm contemporary and classic looks for your pool, pool deck, and a variety of other backyard amenities.
