Cool Your Pool

July 15, 2019 By Goodall Staff - s.r.

Pool with Ice

Summer is here and diving into your backyard pool is a refreshing thought.  Until you take that dive and find yourself in water temperature that is above 90 degrees.  You soon discover that this is not a comfortable temperature.  It Is too warm and does not give you that exhilarating feeling you were hoping for.  At Goodall Pools & Spas, we have some suggestions for that problem.

Ways to Lower Pool Temperature

There are some steps you can take to lower the water temperature.  Some examples are:

  • Add a fountain or waterfall.  The water movement created by a fountain or waterfall causes evaporation which cools the water.  If you do not have a fountain or waterfall built into your pool, you can find aftermarket fountains that will attach to your pool return.
  • Add Ice.  This sounds like a great idea, and while it works, it is not practical.  It takes a huge amount of ice to cool down the water, and the cooling is only temporary.
  • Drain and refill.  This does work well, but there are several drawbacks.  One, it is wasteful.  Two, you will have to rebalance the water chemistry.  This option also wastes water.
  • Shade.  You can plant some trees around the pool that will allow the pool to have some points of shade.
  • Reversible heat pumps.  These are expensive additions to your pool, but they are effective in cooling your pool water.
  • Evaporative coolers.  It is possible to lower the pool temperature five to ten degrees with an evaporative cooler.  This depends on the size of the cooler and the pool as well as the ambient temperature and the humidity.  Keep in mind that an evaporative cooler cannot heat the pool when your pool temperature dips below that which is comfortable.
  • Cooling the pool environment.  This means adding things like portable coolers and fans in the pool area.  If you do this, make certain that electrical outlets are installed as ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI).
  • Misting the backyard pool area, like the way restaurants do on their patios.

For more information on how to cool your pool water this summer, contact us at Goodall Pool & Spas.  We have more than 50 years of experience in the pool installation and maintenance business and can work with you to be sure your water is at a temperature you and your guests will enjoy.
