Swimming Pool Water Testing

August 12, 2019 By Goodall Staff - s.r.

Hand Holding Pool Chemicals

No matter what type of backyard swimming pool you have, in-ground or above ground, testing the chemical levels of the water is vital to having a safe environment with clear water for your swimmers to enjoy.  At Goodall Pools & Spas, we offer FREE water testing and take the guessing game out of balancing your water.  When pool water is properly balanced, swimmers do not need to worry about watery eyes, itching skin, or green hair.

Testing for Recommended Chemical Levels

There are several chemical levels you need to check.  Ideally, you should check the chemical levels daily.  But, in a real world, that is not possible.  Hectic schedules required of work, school, extracurricular activities, hobbies, recreation and other time-consuming activities make it almost impossible for pool owners to conduct daily testing.  Try to bring a water test into one of our stores at least once every two weeks, and test at home with test strips a couple times a week.  The most important items to test includes:

  • pH: Recommended range is between 7.4 and 7.6.  Higher pH levels may damper the effectiveness of the chlorine and result in cloudy water.  Lower pH levels result in acidic water.  If not treated to raise the pH level, the acidic water can corrode the pool surface and the pool equipment, causing deterioration.
  • Chlorine level: Recommended range is 1.0 to 4.0 ppm.  You can add chlorine sticks to your skimmer basket, install a chlorinator to routinely add chlorine on a regular basis, or install a salt system to make your own chlorine.
  • Total Alkalinity (TA)
  • Calcium Hardness
  • Cyanuric acid (CYA)

The recommended levels may change depending on what your pool maintenance service company determines are the best levels for your particular pool.  Rain can change the chemical balance, so always test the water after it rains.

Regular and consistent pool water testing benefits more than just swimmers.  Keeping the pool water balanced prolongs the life of the pool surface and your pool equipment.  It can also benefit your wallet.  Regular maintenance is less costly than cleaning up algae, cloudy water, or replacing your pool liner and equipment.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we always provide FREE water testing in all our stores.  We also offer Prestige Pool Maintenance at different levels to meet your specific needs, including pool water testing.  This ensures that your family members and guests to enjoy their day at your pool.  Contact us for more information.
