As we move into fall, temperatures are dropping approximately 10 degrees every month.  We will move from the average outdoor temperature in September of mid to low 70s down to an average temperature in the 50s in November.  Although it is getting cooler, there is still time for fall swimming.  Goodall Pools & Spas is your go-to company for tips about how to be sure your fall swimming plans turn out to be the best they can be.

Most casual swimmers like pool water to be between 80 and 84 degrees, which is the temperature at which most hotels and resorts maintain their pool water.  Other swimmers have different ideas of ideal pool water temperature depending on the purpose of their swim.  Some examples follow.

Swimming for Exercise: Lap Swimmers

Swimming laps for exercise causes the body temperature to rise.  When this happens, the water temperature may seem too hot if it is above 80 degrees.  The ideal pool water for this type of swimming is generally between 75-80 degrees.

Swimming Competitively

Competitive swimmers prefer pool water in the cool to cold range.  The low to mid 70’s suits them well.  The water feels cold initially when they first get into it, but it doesn’t take long for the body to warm up when intense training begins.

Depending on the type of swimmer you are, or your friends and family are, there are still weeks of enjoyable fall swimming temperatures.  To extend this time and stretch your swimming to close to 6 months a year, you can install a pool heater.

In addition to pool temperatures being ideal for fall swimming, you will want to keep your pool free from debris, particularly from falling leaves.  Empty the skimmer frequently and remove leaves that remain on top of the water.

For more information about taking advantage of fall swimming, or for ways we can make your pool the best it can be for fall with regular maintenance, contact us at Goodall Pools & Spas.  We can also give you an estimate on installing a pool heater which will extend your swimming season substantially.
