Benefits of a Spa During the Winter

Spa and benefits in winter

A lot of people think they have to cover their spa for the winter and not use it again until at least spring. Fortunately, that is a myth. At Goodall Pools & Spas, we have compiled a list of health benefits you can enjoy when you use your spa in the winter.

Health Benefits of Using Your Spa in the Winter

Hydrotherapy means sitting for about 20 minutes in a hot tub where the water is heated to at least 95 degrees but no hotter than 100 degrees. This type of therapy has been used for thousands of years and is known to have many health benefits. You can go to a spa, a physical therapy treatment center, or sit in your own backyard spa. Some major health benefits are:

  • Relief of pain. When the outside temperature drops, many people feel increased pain in their joints and muscles. A soak in a spa helps relax the muscles, increase circulation, and ease the pain. This can be especially helpful at the end of a winter play day spent outdoors sledding, skiing, or just shoveling the sidewalk.
  • Improves balance and coordination. If you have balance problems, you do not want to do exercises on dry ground and risk falling. If you exercise in the safety of a spa where the water is warm and buoyant, you can do your balancing exercises without fear of falling.
  • Helps you lose weight. Many people gain weight over the winter. They eat more over the holiday season and do not get outside in the cold to exercise. When you perform light aerobic exercises in the safety of the spa, you boost your burn of calories which results in weight loss.
  • Boosts your immune system. The swirling hot water raises your body temperature, which in turn, increases your circulation. Your increased circulation increases the movement of lymph which boosts your immune system, making you less susceptible to winter colds and flu.
  • Increases your happiness and sense of well-being. Soaking in the hot water of the spa aids in the release of endorphins. Endorphins are hormones that are natural pain relievers. They also are responsible for releasing a natural neurotransmitter in your body called dopamine, which gives you an overall sense of well-being and makes you feel content and happy.

If you are interested in purchasing a spa, we can answer your questions and help you decide on the type that meets your needs. If you need assistance in maintaining a spa you already own, contact us at Goodall Pools & Spas for help.
