Protecting Your Spa in Inclement Weather

Swim Spa Winter Maintenance

Your spa can stay in excellent condition for many years if you properly maintain it. This includes protecting your spa from damage during inclement weather. At Goodall Pool & Spas, we have some tips that should help against most bad weather conditions.

Invest in the Purchase of a Good Spa Cover

As spa covers age, they absorb condensation from the hot water in the spa. This makes the cover heavy and hard to handle. Spa covers typically need to be replaced every 4 – 5 years. A good, high-quality cover is one of the best defenses against inclement weather you can have.

When purchasing a new cover, make sure it is specifically made for your make and model of spa to ensure it fits properly and retains heat. Choose one that is made of high-quality, heavy-duty, weather-resistant material. Additionally, make sure the center fold is insulated. If it is not properly insulated, that is where heat is most likely to escape.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we can help you choose the best, most efficient cover for your spa.

Prepare Your Spa for Cold Weather

If you do not plan on using your spa during the winter months, you should follow instructions for draining it and properly winterizing it. If you leave any water in the spa and the water freezes, the pipes may crack. If possible, the winterization process is best done by a professional to ensure it is done properly and you do not risk any damage to the spa itself.

After you have drained the spa and blown out the lines, strap its cover on carefully and tight so that snow, leaves, and other debris cannot enter the spa.

Protecting Your Spa from Strong Winds

Be sure your cover is securely fastened down. Just one strong gust of wind that rips your cover off can destroy it. A good, heavy-duty spa cover can be expensive. You do not want to see it lying in pieces on the ground, or having flown into the neighbor’s yard, because it was not properly secured. This is a problem that can be prevented if you pay careful attention to the way in which you have the cover secured over your spa.
