How to Tell If You Need a Vinyl Liner Replacement

Do you need a vinyl liner replacement?

Is your inground pool lined with vinyl? If so, there’s a key question you should have at the front of your mind when your pool reopens in the spring: Is it time for a vinyl liner replacement

Vinyl liners are popular because they’re relatively affordable and easy to install when compared to other pool materials like concrete or fiberglass. Furthermore, they allow for total customization of your pool’s shape and features. However, they do require more frequent replacements than their concrete or fiberglass counterparts. After years of enduring exposure to the elements, heavy-duty chemicals, and UV rays, the vinyl can lose its integrity. If left too long without a replacement, it can leak, leading to a more expensive repair job for you in the end.

With proper care, the vinyl liners we install at Goodall Pools & Spas typically last between 10 and 15 years. So, if Prince William and Kate Middleton were just married the last time your liner was installed or replaced, it may be time for a new one. In the meantime, keep an eye out for these signs that indicate it’s time for a fresh vinyl application in your swimming pool.

Hard-to-Remove Stains

Stains can form on your vinyl liner in a number of ways. If organic matter, such as leaves, dirt, or bugs, enters your pool, it can lead to algae growth. If left unchecked, these algae can imprint brown or green stains into the liner.

Metals like iron, copper, and manganese are also prevalent contributors to staining. They’re usually introduced to the pool environment by either the source water or by metal products that make contact with the water (e.g., ladders, pipes, etc.). When these metals interact with chlorinated water, they can oxidize and build up in dark streaks on the vinyl.

In many cases, you can remove these stains with professional help. But if they’re not addressed quickly, they can become permanently embedded in the liner, leaving unsightly blemishes that are past repair.

Discoloration

Another telltale sign your vinyl liner needs replacing is if the vinyl is looking faded or discolored. This isn’t just a cosmetic issue. It could mean chemicals and solar exposure have weakened the material and it’s time for a new application.

Wrinkles, Ripples, and Tears

Finally, keep an eye out for any wrinkles or ripples in your current vinyl liner. If they don’t disappear over time despite proper maintenance, you may need a replacement. Also, if you see any tears and holes in the liner, put a replacement on your agenda. These damages are usually the result of general wear and tear over time or the improper balance of pool chemicals.

The Vinyl Liner Replacement Process

At Goodall Pools and Spas, we usually complete a “liner flip” (which is our term for a vinyl liner replacement) in two days.

On the first day, we drain the pool and remove the old liner. That same day, we install the new liner and also replace any “white goods” (i.e., pool jet face plates, skimmer face plate, and other elements that trap grit over time). Next, once everything is installed, we refill the pool with water, taking care to remove any creases that may have formed in the liner. You’ll have a clean, beautiful space that’s ready for you to swim and play.

Remember that while your vinyl liner can look and perform like a champ, it has a limited lifespan. Keeping an eye out for these signs of wear and tear can help you identify when it’s time for a replacement before you experience more costly damage.
