What Is a Swim Spa?

The defining feature of swim spas is their programmable flow currents, allowing users to enjoy the benefits of distance swimming even in limited space. Not only that, but they also boast hot tub seats for when you need targeted hydrotherapy for muscle and joint relief.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we carry Hydropool Swim Spas and swim spas by Wellis®. Each makes a versatile addition to your backyard living and your overall wellness routine. From swimming laps and exercising to simply relaxing in the warm water, a swim spa can provide years of enjoyment for everyone in the family. Here, we unpack the essentials of swim spa ownership. Keep them close at hand as you explore this increasingly popular option in the pool and spa market.

How Does a Swim Spa Work?

As we mentioned above, swim spas are an elegant combination between swimming pools and hot tubs. Through a menu on the spa’s control panel, the user can choose between currents of various speeds which, then, pump through the pool. In effect, it’s like the swimmer’s equivalent of a treadmill.

These flowing currents are good for so much more than training your breaststroke. You can incorporate accessories like paddle attachments or aqua bikes into the tub to focus on strength and endurance. Or, if you’re just looking for a fun time with family, bring a body board into your swim spa, and let the kids go for a ride!

Swim spas are especially useful when it comes to physical therapy. Users recovering from certain injuries find that the low-impact, high-resistance environment is perfect for addressing ongoing stress in compromised muscles and joints.

And when the workout is over, you can transition to the hot tub seats configured into the spa shell. Here, targeted hydrotherapy jets help your body recover and bring your mind into a restorative state of calm. It truly is the best of pools and spas combined!

What Do Swim Spas Look Like?

Swim spas, in general, are smaller than the typical inground pool and larger than a hot tub. Some models even contain two separate tub compartments: one elongated compartment for aquatic training and another hot tub-sized compartment for hydrotherapy uses.

When it comes to installation, there are multiple ways to accommodate a swim spa. You can set it up as an above-ground feature or recess it within a deck or flooring configuration. Take a look through our Swim Spa Installation Gallery for inspiration on how your swim spa can look in and around your home.

What Are the Benefits of Owning a Swim Spa?

Between the health benefits and the overall functionality, swim spas provide offer their owners a rather long list of pros.

Swim spa exercise helps you achieve many fitness goals such as:

  • Enhancing cardiovascular health
  • Toning muscles
  • Improving flexibility
  • Burning calories
  • Increasing circulation
  • Improving joint mobility

Aside from exercise, the spa’s hydrotherapy functions can help alleviate pain, stiffness, and inflammation caused by everyday activities. Furthermore, they help stimulate serotonin and dopamine (the “feel good” chemicals) production in your brain. This contributes to improved mood, reduced stress, and better sleep.

The benefits of owning a swim spa go far beyond being a great way to relax and unwind. They can also provide the perfect environment for swimming and exercising all year round. Unlike traditional pools, swim spas carry the advantage of heated water, which means you can extend your swim season to the dead of winter if you desire!

How Much Do Swim Spas Cost?

The cost of a swim spa can vary significantly depending on the brand, model, and features you choose. In 2023, an entry-level model often lands in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. Their prices rise accordingly as you opt for more advanced features. A high-end model can carry a price tag of $60,000 or more.

“Wait,” you may be thinking. “A price like that runs close close to that of an inground pool.” True. But remember that swim spas hold the advantage of being usable all year round. That being the case, you may find that a swim spa, even a high-end one, gives you more bang for your buck in terms of usability compared to a pool.

How Do You Maintain a Swim Spa?

Another area where swim spas have a significant advantage over pools is maintenance. To put it in empirical terms, an inground makes you responsible for 20,000 gallons of water on average. However, with a swim spa, you’re looking at 1,500 to 2,000 gallons gallons of water on average. In other words, you can expect a huge reduction in chemical, water, and heating costs when it comes to maintaining swim spas.

More good news: swim spa maintenance doesn’t have to be hard. As long as you follow a few basic steps, you can look forward to healthy, enjoyable, and long-lasting use. Specifically, you want to:

  • Always cover the spa when it’s not in use
  • Clean the spa filter regularly
  • Empty and clean the spa seasonally
  • Keep your spa water properly sanitized and balanced

Are Swim Spas Energy Efficient?

Yes! While average electricity costs vary depending on the spa’s size and features, most swim spas are designed to meet rigid energy efficiency standards. Features such as energy-saving pumps and insulated covers help operation costs relatively low in comparison to pools.

This, too, demonstrates swim spas’ ability to return on your investment. Keep this in mind as you ponder the question “Should I get a pool or a swim spa?
