How Much Does a Pool Renovation Cost in 2022?

September 29, 2022 By Lindsay Surmacz

Aerial shot of a rectangular pool with a blue liner and surrounding pool deck. The state of the pool liner and the integrity of the pool deck are two factors that affect the average pool renovation cost.

It’s hard to believe, but the 2022 holiday season is at our doorstep. And the 2023 pool season seems like a happy thought for the distant future. This is when we at Goodall Pools & Spas get the most questions about a swimming pool renovation cost. Because, as crazy as it sounds, Memorial Day 2023 will be here before we know it.

So how much does a pool renovation cost in 2022? The short answer is, “It depends.” There is a multitude of decisions you can make that will impact the cost of your pool makeover. Therefore, we suggest asking a different question: what is your budget for a renovation?

Depending on your available resources, you may find that sticking with the basics is your most practical option. Or, you may be pleasantly surprised by your savings and go for a complete renovation. Whatever your decision, the pool and backyard renovation experts at Goodall have the experience and expertise to breathe new life into your pool environment.

Questions for Determining Your Pool Renovation Cost

Calculating a pool renovation cost is easier if you ask yourself a few simple questions before closing up for the winter. Below are some of the essential points to consider when deciding how much you want to invest in your pool’s upgrade for 2023 and beyond.

  1. How does the pool liner look?
  2. How well are the pool deck and backyard supporting the pool?
  3. If we could change just one thing about the pool’s look, what would it be?
  4. What financing options are available?

1. How does the pool liner look?

If you own an inground, vinyl pool, your renovation questionnaire should address the liner first. Even if your pool environment looks and feels ideal right now, you can still count on needing a liner replacement every 10 – 15 years.

After enduring a decade-plus of chemicals, weather, UV light, and pool parties, the liner will show signs of wear and tear. Letting it go unreplenished puts your entire pool structure at risk of critical deterioration and, thus, more costly repairs in the future.

Your pool renovation should be a choice, not an emergency. So budget $7,000 to $12,000 for a liner replacement if 2022 is your year for the change. Read more about vinyl liner replacement costs in our blog, How Much Does a Pool Liner Replacement Cost in 2022?

2. How well are the pool deck and backyard supporting the pool?

We say it almost every day in the Goodall Design Center: It’s not just about the pool. Whether you’re building a brand new pool or enhancing your current one, the objective is to create a fabulous pool environment.

How much would you really enjoy your pool if it weren’t complimented by a reliable pool deck and an inviting backyard setting? Not much. Furthermore, your pool wouldn’t hold up as well, either. The pool deck and the surrounding landscape need to be as structurally sound and attractive as the pool. Otherwise, you’re in for some hazardous conditions and a drop in your property’s overall appeal.

So once you’ve given the pool liner a thorough, honest assessment, move on to the surrounding areas. How is the coping on your pool deck holding up? Do you see cracks or chips in the concrete? What could happen if your guests encounter these flaws while dripping with pool water? These questions have major safety implications for you and your loved ones. So be shrewd about the look and feel of your pool deck.

The same goes for the remainder of the backyard as well. In our blog, Building a Swimming Pool in Pennsylvania: What are the Requirements? we detailed some of the regulated backyard features of a swimming pool design.

One of the non-negotiable items on this list is a fence. The pool structure needs to be surrounded by fencing that measures at least 48 inches in height. The “fencing” can include the house if, indeed, the house connects to the remaining fence perimeter and its entry point to the pool has a self-closing gate with an automatic latch.

What does this have to do with your pool renovation? Safety and functionality. By renovating your pool, you have an opportunity to make your pool more code-compliant.

With each modification, you add to the renovation cost. But the payoff is threefold: you protect the pool, you protect your loved ones, and you elevate the entire backyard aesthetic. All of these translate to your long-term enjoyment of the pool and a possible raise in your property value.

3. If we could change just one thing about the pool’s look, what would it be?

With the essential pool features covered, you’re ready to consider the flourishes. Color. Shape. Water features. All the stylistic additions that make your pool a unique signature in your outdoor space.

The whole point of custom pools is to offer people multiple design options based on their preferences. Some people may be more than happy with a traditional shape and a classic pool look. Others may want a contemporary piece like what they see on the covers of the trade magazine. So if you have funds left over once you’ve brought the essentials up to date, ask yourself this: “If we could change just one thing about the pool’s look, what would it be?”

Your answer could be, “Nothing.” In which case, great! But if there is, indeed, one element that makes it to the top of your “Nice to have” column, let the designer know.

Maybe you wish the stairs were in a different configuration. Or perhaps you’d love a tanning ledge for when you want to soak up a little more sun than water. Or the sight and sound of cascades pouring water into your pool are just too enchanting to pass up.

The point is this: start with one idea, and see where that puts you budget-wise. If you still have funds, move on to a second-choice feature. This practice gets you to effectively prioritize what is worth renovating your pool. 4. What financing options are available?

Always remember that no matter what your bank account reads, there are always pool renovation financing options to explore. At Goodall, we help connect you to reliable financing institutions that can tell you exactly what you qualify for.

Our loan application page is open 24/7 and takes only about a minute to complete. Within 24 business hours, you’re notified of your financing options. From there, you can better tell if your budget will support anything from an energy-efficient equipment installation or an all-out pool and backyard renovation.
